About the workshop

This virtual workshop is a continuation of the NOAA series of workshops on “Leveraging AI in Environmental Sciences.” The third event continues the successes of previous workshops and encourages participation by scientists, program managers, and leaders from the public, academic and private sectors who work in AI and environmental sciences. The theme for this year’s workshop is “Transforming Weather, Climate Services, and Blue Economy with Artificial Intelligence.” This year’s workshop is led by the NOAA Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), a program in the formulation stage.

Maryam Esfarjani is a visionary leader recognized for her ability to help businesses gain insights from data to improve their mission performance. She has  a diverse technical talent in Enterprise Data Strategy and Implementation, Data Management and Architecture, Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks, IT System Deployment and Integration, Customer Experience and Human-Centered Design, Cloud Computing, and IT Infrastructure Engineering. Maryam is known as a collaborator who builds strong trust-based relationships and high performing teams and with a reputation for creatively navigating ambiguity and roadblocks.

Maryam’s expertise stems from 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. She is the Founder and CEO of Insights LC with a focus on development and delivery of innovative solutions that help organizations maximize value from their data. Prior to Insights, she was Aviation Safety Analysis Department Head at MITRE where she led an 80+ employee organization with $30M in projects that focused on developing, evolving, and applying innovative Safety Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine learning techniques to identify emerging aviation risks. Maryam led MITRE’s development of a comprehensive data strategy and action plan as recommendations for strengthening FAA’s existing strategy. She also provided subject matter expertise to the development of Veteran Affairs’ Data Strategy, the second largest Department in Fedearl Government. Maryam improved our Veterans’ experience by conducting evidence-based analysis of disparate data resulting in authoritative sources of Veteran data, establishment of the Veteran Experience Office, and appointment of the first-ever Experience Officer. She drove the development of the VA Transformation plan, creating efficiencies, effectiveness, and accountability by incorporating customer experience KPIs, Journey Maps, and “moments that matter”. Additionally she averted high-risk simultaneous deployments by creating System of System (SOS) Integration approach for 3 mission critical systems at VA, including VA Electronic Healthcare system, Supply Chain, and Financial Management system.

Prior to joining MITRE, Maryam worked with Booz Allen Hamilton where she was accountable for a significant business, delivering Wireless and IT Infrastructure Services and Solutions in the Army and Military Health markets. Additionally, as the Director of Engineering and Network Planning at Thurcom, she oversaw the design and deployment of wireless data communications for Point of Sale solutions in Ohio and Illinois and planned for a nationwide buildout. Maryam’s foundational experience included the role of Senior Principal Engineer at LCC International, the largest Professional Engineering Services firm in the wireless industry.

Maryam received her Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from University of Miami and and Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. As an on-going learner she completed the Executive Training Program in Artificial Intelligence from MIT and holds certifications in Scaled Agile, and RFID+ with additional training in CISSP and PMP.
